Perkins Roofing Corp – South Florida FL

From Pre-Med to Roofing Pioneer

Dean Perkins was studying pre-med at Ohio State University when he took a summer roofing job in Miami. His grandfather had taught him about roofing back in Ohio, but that Miami summer changed everything. Dean caught the entrepreneurial bug and never looked back.

That was 1980. Dean stayed in South Florida, got his contractor’s license, and started Perkins Roofing Corp. What began as one guy with a vision has become one of Southeast Florida’s most respected roofing companies.

These days, Tim Kanak runs the show as President. Tim started as a summer employee back in 2014 while working as a teacher. He was just looking for extra income between school years. Five years later, Tim had transformed the company and grown revenue from around $500,000 to $5 million.

Tim’s background in education shows in how he approaches business – lots of training, clear communication, and always learning something new. He earned his Florida roofing contractor’s license in 2019, joining Dean as one of two licensed contractors in-house.

Multi-Location Coverage

Perkins operates from three main locations across South Florida. Their Miami headquarters at 575 Northwest 152nd Street handles most of the urban commercial work. The Jupiter office opened in 2022, giving them better coverage of Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

They also have operations in Fort Lauderdale, putting them in position to serve Broward County efficiently. This multi-location setup means faster response times whether you’re dealing with a leaky roof in downtown Miami or storm damage in Jupiter.

Their territory runs from the Florida Keys all the way up to West Palm Beach. That’s a lot of ground to cover, but having multiple offices means local crews who know the specific challenges each area faces.

Commercial Flat Roofing Mastery

Tim knows commercial flat roofing inside and out. Recent projects show the range they handle – from massive 26,580 square foot residential installations to smaller commercial buildings.

They work extensively with GAF TPO systems, using 60-mil membranes that reflect South Florida’s brutal heat. One project used GAF EverGuard TPO with tapered insulation systems and SecurRock fiberglass board to meet Miami-Dade construction codes.

Tim’s also a licensed drone pilot, which comes in handy for monitoring project progress and quality control. Customers love getting aerial photos showing exactly what’s happening on their roof.

Their commercial division handles everything from office buildings to warehouses, retail centers, and industrial facilities. They understand that business downtime costs money, so they work efficiently to minimize disruption.

Each commercial project gets a dedicated project manager who visits job sites regularly and reports back with photos and progress updates. Tim insists on daily photo documentation from crew leaders.

Houses and Regular Customers

Most of their work involves helping homeowners protect their biggest investment. They handle complete re-roofs, emergency repairs, and regular maintenance throughout South Florida.

Their residential crews work with all materials – shingle, tile, metal, and flat systems. Whether it’s a small leak repair or a complete hurricane damage restoration, they approach every job with the same attention to detail.

Tim’s implemented training programs that ensure consistent quality across all crews. New employees shadow experienced workers until they’re ready to work independently. Regular “Tool Box Talks” cover safety, materials, and daily strategy.

Customer service gets emphasized constantly through their “Knowledge is power” approach. They believe informed customers make better decisions and have better experiences.

Hurricane Country Expertise

Forty-plus years in South Florida means they’ve weathered every major storm that’s hit the region. They know which materials hold up best, how to install systems that survive category-level winds, and what it takes to rebuild after major hurricanes.

Their crews stock emergency materials during hurricane season and position strategically before storms hit. When conditions allow, they’re out helping customers with temporary protection and damage assessment.

South Florida’s daily weather patterns – afternoon thunderstorms, UV exposure, salt air, high humidity – require specific installation techniques and material choices. Generic approaches don’t work here.

They maintain memberships in the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association and the Roofing Contractors Association of South Florida, staying current on codes, techniques, and industry best practices.

Professional Standing

Dean holds Florida contractor license CCC042786 (earned in 1987), while Tim earned his license CCC1331944 in 2019. Having two licensed contractors in-house provides backup coverage and additional expertise for complex projects.

BuildZoom scores them at 116, placing them above 98% of Florida’s 191,000+ contractors. Permit records show 473 building permits totaling over $10.8 million in recent years, demonstrating consistent activity and proper permitting.

Tim holds certifications from major manufacturers including Polyglass, GAF, Verisco, and Gulf Coast Supply & Manufacturing. These manufacturer relationships provide access to premium materials and extended warranties.

They carry full workers’ compensation for all employees and maintain active memberships in industry associations that promote continuing education and community involvement.

Community Connection

Beyond just fixing roofs, they’re active community supporters. They’re major donors to Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and regularly participate in charitable activities.

Tim loves showing customers before-and-after photos of completed projects, plus they do little extras like sports game ticket giveaways, holiday gifts, and handwritten thank-you cards.

They’ve worked on properties for famous athletes, musicians, and celebrities on Fisher Island, but they treat every customer – from homeowners to high-profile clients – with the same professional attention.

Their YouTube channel provides educational content that helps customers understand roofing processes and make informed decisions about their properties.
