Kelly Roofing: Naples Family Business Since 1972

Our Story

My dad Joe Kelly packed up his tools in New York City back in 1972 and drove down to Naples. He had one simple plan – start a roofing business and raise his family in Florida.

Dad was a journeyman roofer up in NYC. He knew how to fix roofs the right way. When he got to Naples, things were different though. The weather was brutal on roofs. The building codes were changing. He had to learn Florida roofing from scratch.

At first, Dad did both roofing and painting. Money was tight with a young family. But Collier County started making contractors pick one trade and get licensed. Dad chose roofing. Good thing too – look where we are now.

I grew up following Dad around job sites. Never planned on running the business though. I was more interested in computers and business classes in high school. Figured I’d help Dad with the paperwork side while he handled the roofing.

Then everything changed in 1993. Dad fell off a roof and broke both wrists bad. Real bad. Couldn’t work for months. I was 17, just graduated high school, and suddenly I’m running Kelly Roofing.

That accident forced me to grow up fast. Had to take everything I learned about business and computers and figure out how to actually run a roofing company. Dad taught me the roofing part from his hospital bed.

Thirty years later, I’m still here. Dad’s mostly retired now, but he still comes by the shop. And my son just joined the business last year. Three generations of Kellys fixing roofs in Southwest Florida.

Where We Work

We stick to Southwest Florida because that’s what we know best. Been working these same counties since 1972.

Main Areas:

  • Naples and Marco: Our home base. We know every neighborhood.
  • Fort Myers and Cape Coral: Lee County keeps us busy year-round.
  • Bonita Springs and Estero: Growing fast, lots of new construction.
  • Punta Gorda area: Charlotte County work when folks call.

Here’s the thing about Southwest Florida – every area is different. Marco Island gets hit harder by salt air. East Naples floods during summer storms. Cape Coral has newer homes with different problems than old Naples.

After 50 years here, we know which streets flood, where hurricane winds hit hardest, and how different neighborhoods age. That local knowledge saves customers money because we recommend the right roof for each specific location.

Commercial Flat Roofs

Business owners call us because they can’t afford roof failures. One leak shuts down operations. Inventory gets ruined. Customers go elsewhere.

Flat Roof Types:

  • TPO: Those white roofs you see everywhere. Bounce heat back, cut air conditioning costs.
  • Duro-Last: Custom-made in the factory for your exact building. Way fewer seams means way fewer leaks.
  • EPDM: Black rubber that lasts forever. Great for older buildings.
  • Built-Up: Old-school tar and gravel. Still works great in certain situations.

Buildings We Fix:

  • Shopping centers and offices
  • Warehouses and factories
  • Schools and medical buildings
  • Restaurants and hotels

Why Businesses Choose Us: We’re factory-certified with the big manufacturers. That gets you better warranties and materials that regular contractors can’t offer. Our commercial warranties even cover damage inside your building if the roof leaks – nobody else does that around here.

We work around your schedule. Done major roof jobs over weekends so businesses didn’t have to close. Sometimes that costs more, but it’s cheaper than losing a week of sales.

Storm Response: Keep emergency supplies ready all hurricane season. Soon as winds die down, we’re out checking on our commercial customers. Many business owners have my cell number for real emergencies.

Houses and Regular Roofing

Florida beats up roofs like nowhere else. Daily thunderstorms all summer. Hurricanes every few years. That sun just bakes everything.

What We Install:

  • Shingles rated for Florida winds
  • Metal roofing that handles hurricanes
  • Tile roofs that last 50+ years
  • Flat roofs for modern houses
  • Tesla Solar Roof systems

How We Do It Different: We were the first company in Southwest Florida to glue the underlayment directly to the roof deck. Creates a waterproof barrier even if shingles blow off during storms.

Also invented our own tile installation method using both glue and screws. Wind testing showed it’s stronger than what the building code requires. Had to be – we live here too.

Insurance Work: Deal with insurance companies all the time after storms. Most adjusters know us and trust our damage reports. We handle all the paperwork and make sure you get a fair settlement.

One thing I learned – don’t wait on roof repairs. That small leak from the last storm will be a big leak during the next one.

Florida Weather Problems

Fifty years down here taught us how weather destroys roofs. Been through every hurricane that’s hit Southwest Florida since 1972.

The Heat: Attics hit 150+ degrees in summer. That heat makes materials expand and contract until they crack. We use stuff designed for extreme heat and install vents that actually move air.

Daily Storms: June through September, storms hit almost every afternoon. Heavy rain finds the tiniest holes and turns them into big problems. We seal everything tight.

Hurricanes: We stock emergency materials before storms hit. After Hurricane Charley in 2004, we fixed 52 roofs in Cape Coral for free. When Wilma hit Naples in 2005, we donated 75 emergency repairs. After Irma in 2017, worked 12-hour days for weeks getting people protected.

Salt Air: If you’re near the water, salt air eats metal faster. We use marine-grade materials and special installation methods for coastal homes.
